Frequently Asked Questions
How does localized cryotherapy work for horses?

Localized Cryotherapy for horses works by reducing the skin's surface temperature to a degree cold enough to trigger natural physiological processes that result in reduced pain and inflammation, improved circulation, and better mobility.

Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, treatments are applied to specific areas of the body, delivering more intense effects.

The key components that make localized cryotherapy most effective are rapid cooling and high pressure.

INSTANTCRYO™ follows this principle by releasing -108°F (-78°C) liquid CO₂ at 52 bar (756 psi). Within 30 seconds, the horse’s skin is reduced to 4°C (39.2°F), allowing the full therapeutic benefits to be achieved.

The therapy is extremely effective for the recovery and rehabilitation of many equine injuries and conditions, as well as for maintenance and preventative care.

Is equine cryotherapy safe for horses?

Yes, localized cryotherapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment for horses with minimal side effects.

The INSTANTCRYO™ device features an intelligent auto-shutoff system and proximity sensor. This minimizes the risk of cold burns and ensures safe treatments when used correctly.

Learn more about our built-in safety features.

Will horses accept treatments?

Most horses respond well to the treatments since they are non-invasive, painless, and require no restraints. Many therapists report that their horses appear more relaxed afterwards.

For sensitive horses that may react to the device's noise, we recommend starting by operating the device at a distance and using ear muffs until they adjust.

How do I determine the number of treatments needed for specific equine conditions?

Digital protocol cards for various injuries and conditions are provided after purchase, and you'll receive further guidance on treatment frequency during the initial training.

We also offer comprehensive ongoing support, meaning you can ask us anytime about optimal treatment delivery for a specific condition you're uncertain about.
Is INSTANTCRYO™ competition safe?

For the safety and wellbeing of horses, we ask all users to follow the governing body regulations on using cryotherapy in competitions.

For instance, the current FEI regulations prohibit cryotherapy five days before and during FEI events.

Is localized cryotherapy better than icing a horse?

Ice boots use cold water/ice to reduce skin temperature to approximately 46°F/8°C within 20 minutes.

INSTANTCRYO™ uses liquid CO₂ and high pressure to reduce skin to 39°F/4°C within 30 seconds. This makes cryotherapy more effective for achieving the therapeutic benefits of cold due to:

1. Speed of Cooling
Reducing skin surface temperature to 39°F/4°C within 30 seconds stimulates a more potent thermic shock. 4x the volume of blood is delivered to cooled tissues post-treatment, enhancing repair and recovery.

2. Deep Penetration
The higher pressure (756 psi) triggers deep receptors like the Pacinian corpuscles. This further contributes to the reduction in pain and inflammation, as well as influences muscle tone and relaxation.

3. Ease of Use
Any injury can be treated in as quickly as 30 seconds once per day, compared to ice boots that require up to 20 minutes several times a day.

INSTANTCRYO™ can also be safely used for human treatments. Therapeutic areas include Recovery and Pain Relief, Dermatology, and Aesthetics.
